October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, a wonderful initiative to help inspire us to think about what goes in our mouth and how our choices can impact the world in which we share. We can all stick our head in the sand, if we so choose, and ignore the reality of what goes on in the world. Or we can do something about it. We live on this planet and have the power to vote every day with the choices we make at the supermarket/deli/grocery and department store. Every time you buy a product you are saying to that company, ‘keep on doing what you are doing.’ You are supporting everything that company does: every source of raw material, every packaging solution, every environmental standard that they are undertaking, every form of employee relations, every marketing choice. A recent trip through Asia has inspired me to share one of the best-kept secrets in the world to pamper your body and hair: camellia seed oil.
A few drops a day of this antioxidant-rich oil will help revitalise and rejuvenate your complexion, while protecting your skin from UV rays and helping prevent freckles, age spots and wrinkles. A few drops to your hair will help create silky tresses without leaving a greasy feel. Continue reading
There’s one essential oil that I believe should be in every household: lavandula angustifolia more commonly known as lavender. This beautiful “mother of all essential oils” has a multitude of practical uses. I have certainly put the so-called beneficial properties to the test time and time again and have never been let down.
My first encounter with lavender oil was when I was studying aromatherapy. I was making pasta for dinner and as I was transferring the pot of freshly boiled water to the sink my oven mitt got caught on a protruding part of the stove, causing the pot to tip and splash boiling water all over my forearm. The change of season presents all sorts of issues for your body, physically and emotionally, so whether you’re feeling the chill of the winter air or the heat of the summer sun, there’s no better time to take a break from your busy schedule to nurture and pamper yourself. Continue reading
I am particularly particular when it comes to what I put on my skin. So much so that I make my own body and face care products, and only try other brands once I have scrutinized the ingredients list.
One thing I have always avoided is fake tan. Not only because of the frightening mix of harsh ingredients but more so because I can not bear the smell and look of it. I would much prefer to revel in my natural skin tone. There have however been a couple of occasions that called for an application… Continue reading
I have recently become captivated by the ever so health-enhancing hemp plant and have been experimenting with all things hemp: hemp milk on my porridge; hemp seeds and hemp protein powder in my smoothies and in my cacao brownies; hemp oil in my salad dressings; and hemp oil in my face and body care products.
Why? Simply because the beneficial properties are astounding! Continue reading
One of the things I love about what I do for a living is that it gives me a great opportunity to learn and experience the therapeutic benefits of all sorts of plants. Over the years I have become especially fond of certain plant extracts purely because I am astonished at the healing properties and positive change they can have on the physical and emotional state of people. Not a day goes by where I don’t come in contact with essential oils. Whether it’s with a bath, my skin and body care products or within the candles and oil burners that scent my home I truly love the joy of using aromatherapy to help create a mood. Continue reading
Being a girly girl, I love my bedtime beauty ritual of applying a highly nourishing face serum to help me on my quest for smooth glowing skin when I wake. But sometimes…. more often than less… I wake with a birds’ nest of tangled hair and the occasional crease mark on my face from the pillow. Doesn’t sound too much like beauty sleep, does it?! When was the last time you read the ingredients list of your personal care products?
If you looked up each ingredient you’d be mortified. I was. So I begun the search for natural and organic alternatives to all the personal care products that I come in contact with on a day-to-day basis to reduce my exposure to toxic chemicals. Here are a few of my favourite products of natural everyday essentials: Continue reading

I don’t know about you, but as the seasons change and my body adjusts to the cooler days and nights I battle to keep my skin from looking like it belongs to a reptile. In particular, my hands and nails that are constantly exposed to the elements – cooler temperatures, wind and air-conditioned offices. So, to help me on my quest for beautifully soft looking hands, I make sure that I keep a Be Genki Serenity Hand Cream close-by at all times. Continue reading
