Give Yourself the Gift of Self-Worth, Self-Love and Self-Gratification this Holiday Season

As December rolls around there’s one word that consumes my mind … gifts. I love the whole gift-giving ritual of finding a little special something that will bring smiles of joy to a loved one with the underlying thought of “I love you” and “thank you for being such a wonderful part of my life”. But December is also the month that I like to gift myself lovely little treats, to indulge in my self-worth, self-love and self-gratification.

No matter who I talk to: female or male; old, middle-aged or young; living here or abroad; religious or agnostic; it seems we all have one thing in common … life can be full of ups and downs.

It is for this very reason that I feel it so important to take the time to honor yourself. After all, the relationship that we have with ourself is the most important relationship of all, and the one from which all other relationships stem from. If you don’t love and nurture yourself, how can you truly love and nurture someone else?

When those challenging events surface in your life, it is so important to know what to do when faced with stress, to have the confidence to help ourselves, and know who to turn to, and not freak out and think that our entire universe is crashing down upon us.

I know that sometimes life can throw a few nasty surprises and when it does, I personally feel as though someone has just taken me and my life and thrown it in the washing machine, tumble dryer and then pressed it with a burning hot iron. Challenging situations can be distressing, disorienting and painfully hard to endure. BUT… I sincerely believe that the universe is here to look after us, and if we stay strong and true to nurturing ourself then it’s only a matter of time before all that was once causing us stress will fade.

So, if you’ve had a particularly stressful year, or have anxiety over the stress of what Christmas brings or are going through a stressful chapter in your life then how about joining me by dedicating the month of December to giving yourself an abundance of gifts. And by “gifts” I mean prioritizing all the things that bring joy to your life.

Here’s my list of gifts-to-me that will hopefully help to get the creative juices in your mind flowing. (Remember though, these are things that bring me joy, so your list of gifts may be completely different.)

~ get to a yoga class at least 3 times a week
~ go for a run on the beach at least 2 times a week
~ go for a swim and body surf in the ocean at least 2 times a week
~ take my early morning chai tea down to the beach and take sips whilst watching the sun rise
~ babysit a friend’s dog for a night and take him/her to the park for a big walk
~ spend a big chunk of Sunday cooking my favorite recipes
~ get to the organic growers market on Saturday morning and have a wander with no time restriction
~ book in for a massage
~ fill my home with essential oil scented candles (Be Genki Serenity* and Sensuality**, of course)
~ create a spa-like sanctuary in my bathroom and soak in the bath for half an hour
~ dedicate an hour of the day for reading all those books that have piled up in the “must-read” box.
